Epworth League Expedition
July 2019 *dates TBD
A trip specifically for Discipleship Intensive participants of the summer term, individuals have the chance to explore God’s creation out west on this fifteen day road trip. Through conquering many life-firsts and daily spiritual discussion, individuals get to experience spiritual growth and grow closer with one another.
In June 2015, the first Epworth League Expedition explored the western part of South Dakota. The group was on mission from around 9:00 am to 2:00 pm every day and then went sightseeing. Mission work included cleaning offices and creating hygiene packs at the Hope Center, as well as building large wooden boxes and sorting donated goods at the Habitat of Humanity Restore in Rapid City. Sightseeing included Mount Rushmore, the Badlands, Mammoth Site, and the historical caves of the Black Hills.
In July 2016, the second Epworth League Expedition visited the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone National Park, Wind Cave, and Glacier National Park. Participants also had the opportunity to serve at Whitefish United Methodist Church in Montana, Jubilee Inner-town Ministry in Wyoming, and Habitat for Humanity in Wyoming. During the evenings, participants would take turns cooking dinner and leading discipleship classes.
In 2017, there was a total of 14 participants on the trip. We added a stop this year to Theodore Roosevelt National Park in Dickinson, ND. Beyond that, the group got to encounter a traffic jam due to a massive herd of bison, hiked many miles up in the mountains, saw all the geysers Yellowstone had to offer, and had several biblical discussions in the evenings. A common theme of this trip was discernment of God’s will for our lives and getting to know God deeper through interacting with his creation.
The Epworth League Expedition of 2018 will be exclusively for Discipleship Intensive
participants again. The participants can expect a similar experience as previous years –
hiking, missions, nightly discussions, making meals together, and reflecting on God’s calling.
